James Games #10

I’ve dropped the ball on keeping up with these posts, that’s partially because I’ve been busy, but largely because I just haven’t done much worth writing about the last couple weeks. Today’s post will be short, hoping to hop back in and have more to talk about next week.

What I’ve Been Up To

Until Dawn (Playstation 4)

We finished Until Dawn. I enjoyed it, definitely worth the $10 I paid for it. Most of the characters were flat to me, but that didn’t really bother me too much. My main goal was to try to keep everyone alive, and we failed miserably. At the end of the game, I think we only had 3 of the 8 characters left, 4 of them died in the last 30 minutes. I’ll probably play through the game again eventually, but for now I’m going to set it aside.

My Friend Pedro (Nintendo Switch)

My Friend Pedro was released June 20th on PC and Nintendo Switch. I finished the whole game, and it was incredibly fun. From the moment I saw the trailer, I was instantly hooked. I’m not usually a fan of run-n-guns, and after Kirby Star Allies, I’ve been skeptical about unknown platformers. My Friend Pedro is a perfect combination of the two. I think the whole game took about 6 hours on the normal difficulty. The entire time, you’re discovering more possibilities, new weapons, enemies and platforming elements continue to appear for the entire game. It’s well worth the $20 I paid for it, and I’m looking forward to a sequel or some DLC. The only downside is that the controls on Switch are a little tough to adjust to, and if you leave the game for a couple days you might forget everything.

Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo Switch)

Mario Maker 2 just launched on the Nintendo Switch last week. I never played the first Mario Maker on the Wii U, largely because it didn’t have an offline single-player mode. I’m about half way though the single player mode, and I’ve enjoyed it a lot. I’ve also played a few levels made by real people and I’ve enjoyed those too. Earlier today I tweeted that if anyone has levels they’ve made, to let me know and I’ll give them a shot, and I look forward to trying those later this week.

Halo: Combat Evolved (XBOX One S)

I’ve beaten Halo many times on PC, but never on XBOX. The controls and feeling of the Original Halo still hold up after all these years. The Master Chief Collection gives you the ability to switch between the remastered graphics and the original graphics, and it’s been very cool to see how much some stuff has changed and what’s stayed the same. I think that I’m getting close to the end of the story, and I look forward to moving on to Halo 2, a game that I’ve never played at all.

A Star is Born (Movie)

A Star is Born was released in 2018, and it’s a remake of a couple films of the same name. I missed this one when it was in theaters, so my wife and I watched it at home this past week for the first time. This version starred Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. Both gave phenomenal performances, and I’d be interested to see them in more movies together in the future.

Rewatching X-Men (Movies)

With the release of Dark Phoenix, my wife and I were inspired to rewatch some other X-Men Movies. X-Men Apocalypse is still just as forgettable as it was in theaters. The Wolverine is still pretty entertaining, I’ve always enjoyed that section of Logan’s story. X-Men & X2: X-Men United hold up surprisingly well. I really like the chemistry between Eric and Charles, and the world feels real and unique. The Last Stand is one of the low points of the series for me. There are so many plot lines and throw-away characters, that the entire movie feels overcrowded. Jean Gray was such a shallow character in the previous two films, that I didn’t really care for her character throughout the movie. Also, the movie really does its best to hit every mid-2000s movie trope, including a variation of “no dad, I’m giving up your dream”. I still think that most of the X-Men movies are good, but a couple of them have soured over the years.

What I’m Looking Forward To

I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts on Toy Story 4, finishing Days Gone, Spider-Man Far From Home, Yesterday and much more. Make sure to check bak in next week.
